The Virgen del Socorro of the hermitage of Tiagua was left without jewels this Tuesday. And it is that that night someone broke into this small temple breaking a window and took them. The robbery was reported to the Local Police of Teguise.

It was a neighbor of the town who realized that in that small church there was a window with a broken glass and alerted the Local Police this Wednesday. The parish priest who officiates mass in the hermitage, Víctor Domínguez, was on vacation outside the island, but he was notified by telephone of what happened. "I think it was simply a search for money, but in the hermitages there is no money," he explained to La Voz.

That is why he believes that when they did not find cash they decided to take "the only" thing of value that was in the hermitage, the jewels of the Virgin. But "the Virgen del Socorro is not of many jewels", the priest points out. So the 'booty' they took was reduced to "a little medal she had, some bracelets and a ring, four jewels at most".

According to the priest, the thieves "did not destroy anything." They only took the jewels and "scattered the consecrated particles a little", since "they opened the tabernacle thinking it was perhaps something else", the priest ventures.

"They did not take the tabernacle, nor the virgin, they did not destroy anything... it almost seems that they asked permission to enter to steal", says Víctor Domínguez relieved, pointing out that the result of the robbery could have been worse. This Thursday a new glass had already been placed and the church was back without damage.

The priest, although he has indicated that, at least in recent years, there has been no robbery in this hermitage and has congratulated that the thieves did not cause major damage, has emphasized that this type of assaults occur with some frequency on the island. "Throughout this year they have robbed in several hermitages on the island. In Yaiza several times, in Playa Honda, in Güime... in Los Dolores even in broad daylight they forced the lamp, in broad daylight", he emphasizes.
