The Nature Protection Department (Deprona) Timanfaya Lanzarote of the Civil Guard investigated three people in Lanzarote on February 11 for their alleged participation in a crime against flora and fauna, as they were found illegally fishing in the municipality of Haría.

Agents from the Costa Teguise Main Post, in the performance of their duties, saw two people spearfishing in the area known as Caleta de Mero, in Haría, within the Marine Reserve Protected Area.

Once they left the marine environment, they were intercepted by the agents. Among their belongings were all the necessary tools for fishing such as neoprene, fins, glasses and rifle, as well as "fish catches of considerable consideration".

The Deprona Timanfaya Lanzarote, as competent in the conservation of protected areas, initiated investigation proceedings of the identified persons. Therefore, the acting force in collaboration with the agents of the Ministry of Fisheries of the Marine Reserve, locate the place of the events as a protected area whose main purpose is the regeneration of fishery resources, the preservation of natural wealth, the conservation of different marine species and the recovery of ecosystems thanks to its special characteristics.

For these reasons, they classify the facts as an alleged crime, investigating both the two people who carried out the spearfishing, as well as a third person who was carrying out surveillance work, as alleged perpetrators of a crime against flora and fauna. The seized catches, a total of 55 kilograms of fish, were handed over under receipt to the NGO Calor y Café in the town of Arrecife.
