The TAMPM union (Your abandonment can kill me) denounces serious incidents in the Tahíche prison perpetrated by three inmates who caused injuries of different consideration to four officials, one of them the head of Services.
The events took place last Tuesday, April 11, when "one of the three inmates must leave the isolation department to be transferred to a module of ordinary life regime. At the moment in which the officials appear to carry out said movement, the inmate reacts in a violent and aggressive way, insulting and threatening those present and inviting them to take him out of the cell he occupies by force. All this while he barricades himself as far away as possible from the door and the public workers", according to the union's account.
"Given the situation created by the aforementioned, two other inmates with whom they had been living until that moment take the opportunity to imitate their behavior in terms of threats and insults while hitting the windows, breaking the glass of the same and arming themselves with the pieces they obtain from their actions", they continue explaining from TAMPM.
TAMPM points out that "as a consequence of all the events carried out in a totally voluntary and conscious manner by the three inmates and, being demonstrated with their actions the clear objective of causing both material damage (with destruction of furniture) and personal damage, the officials who, due to their total commitment to the performance of the work they have entrusted and with the administration that has them so forgotten and criminalized, are injured with sprains in various joints, cuts in the extremities as well as numerous blows and bruises throughout the body".
From the union organization, they regret that "situations of great tension are experienced again, with injured public workers and a serious psychological burden that little by little takes its toll on a body of officials that is totally forgotten, to whom material resources are denied and who carry out a daily service with a clear deficit of personnel in their staff".
From TAMPM Gran Canaria, they "appreciate the professionalism shown by all the workers that make up the staff of the Lanzarote penitentiary center and with which they are able to supply all the deficiencies that seem to matter very little to the General Secretariat of Penitentiary Institutions and the Ministry of the Interior".
Finally, they remember "that these workers still do not obtain the status of authority agents despite working daily with the most complicated part of society".
