The young man arrested for the very serious burns suffered by a minor in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria early this Tuesday morning has declared to the Police that what happened was an accident, that a mattress on which they were lying smoking caught fire.
According to sources from the investigation informed EFE, Abarrafía H., 20 years old, was discharged from the hospital on Wednesday afternoon at the Hospital de Gran Canaria Doctor Negrín, where he had been admitted for smoke inhalation poisoning, and was taken to police facilities for questioning.
So far, the Women's Violence Courts of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria have not intervened in the case, because it is not clear whether or not there was a relationship between the detainee and the minor and whether or not the events occurred in that context.
In principle, it is not expected to be brought to judicial disposition in the next few hours, but on Friday or Saturday.
The Police has reported that when a patrol found the girl, a 17-year-old girl under the tutelage of the Government of the Canary Islands, she pointed to the young Moroccan as the perpetrator of the fire, but there is still no detailed statement from her, because she is admitted to Seville with very serious burns to 95% of her body after the detainee allegedly doused her with flammable liquid.
The investigators are still working with the hypothesis that there is someone else involved in the events.
The events occurred around 4:00 in the morning in the neighborhood of La Isleta, shortly before hundreds of people took to the streets to participate in the procession of the Virgen del Carmen, on the big day of that area of the city, a port and popular neighborhood.
According to Canarias 7 and corroborated by EFE, the young detainee arrived by boat in the early morning of June 2 to Lanzarote, an island where he was registered until he was transferred to a first reception center in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
Like the majority of immigrants who arrive irregularly to the Spanish coasts, Abarrafía H. received the same day of his rescue at sea an agreement of return to Morocco, in his case in the Police Station of Arrecife.
