The Ombudsman in Spain, Francisco Fernández Marugán, announced this Wednesday that he has initiated an action to learn about the circumstances in which seven people died in the small boat that arrived last Monday in Costa Teguise.
In a statement, Fernández Marugán recalls that the boat was carrying at least 27 people, "including several minors", and had been at sea for two days when it was spotted by lifeguards on Playa Bastián.
Fernández Marugán has addressed the Government Delegation in the Autonomous Community of the Canary Islands after receiving a letter from the Canarian Deputy of the Common in which he expressed his "concern about possible failures" of the integrated external surveillance system (SIVE) on the island of Lanzarote.
For this reason, the Defender explains that he has requested information on the circumstances in which the death of these seven people would have occurred and on the operation of the SIVE in Lanzarote.
