The Seismic Network of the Volcanological Institute of the Canary Islands (Involcan) recorded the earthquake in Morocco on Friday night and pointed out that it was "slightly felt" in the Canary Islands as a "mild" earthquake.

From the Emergency Consortium they have indicated to La Voz that they have no record of any calls in Lanzarote. However, CECOES has received several from Gran Canaria warning that they felt the tremor.

The earthquake has been located along the Atlas Mountains, between the cities of Marrakech and Agadir, and so far there are at least 632 fatalities and 329 injured.

Involcan has indicated that the magnitude of the earthquake has been estimated at 6.8 - the largest magnitude recorded in Morocco since there has been an instrumental record - and its depth has been about ten kilometers.

"The mechanism of the earthquake is compressive, being related to the formation process of the Atlas Mountains themselves," says the Volcanological Institute.

"The maximum intensity of this earthquake has been estimated at grade IX on the Mercalli scale, classifying it as 'very destructive'," adds Involcan.
