The fog has been the main protagonist in Tenerife during the weekend. Flights to and from Tenerife North suffered diversions due to the presence of the meteorological phenomenon. Specifically, about 41 flights that came from all over Spain were transferred to Tenerife South due to the storm.
The Lanzarotean troupe 'Los Cumbacheros' has also suffered the consequences of delays and cancellations at the airport. Since Sunday, the 69 members of the group had to wait to be relocated on a flight. "We were at the airport from twelve in the morning to try to leave on one," said one of them, Sergio Niz to La Voz, during an interview on Radio Lanzarote-Onda Cero.
Some of the members of the troupe were able to travel to Lanzarote on Sunday. "Ten of our colleagues were able to return," he revealed. An important event awaits them on the island for the Carnival. "We have to work this Monday on the float parade," he says. In addition, some of the members have managed to return to the island by other means. "Those who traveled by boat have already returned, with the material and clothes, but we are missing," he points out. We are still 45 people who are still pending," he adds.
They anxiously await to perform at the Arrecife Carnival. "We hope to be able to return in time," he wished before the microphones. They have all their hopes set on arriving, even if it is a little late. "We are coming with strength to see if we can get to Lanzarote," he added.
Although there is fatigue and despair, the important thing is to be able to attend the carnival event. "If we arrive we have to be in the parade, we have to comply," he stressed. An experience they already had in 2020 and managed to attend the Carnival without any problems. "It already happened to us years ago due to haze, we spent two days at the Gran Canaria airport and we managed to get to the arena," he recalled.
After staying almost a whole day at the airport, they were finally able to stay in a hotel on Sunday night. "They have put us in a hotel in Puerto de la Cruz," he said. A solution that they celebrate from the neighboring island. "We have been lucky, they have had that detail so that we have been able to sleep a couple of hours and take a shower," he says.
Stretchers at the airport
The Red Cross installed stretchers on Sunday at the airport to encourage travelers who were sleeping there to rest. "There were people waiting since Friday and many people from Lanzarote lying around at the airport," he revealed. A problem that has generated chaos among passengers. "A bit of chaos regarding the issue," he concludes.
