The bodies of María Luisa Estévez, her son Javier Estévez, the sisters Araceli Domínguez and Alicia, as well as their cousin Cristina Domínguez, landed this noon at Gran Canaria Airport, on Spanair flight JK5008.
The first two are residents of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria although they come from Gáldar, and the last three are residents of the municipality of San Mateo. The bodies were handed over to their families at the Gando Military Base, where Carolina Darias, the Government Delegate in the Canary Islands, José Miguel Pérez, Mercedes Roldós, Minister of Health of the Canary Islands Government, President of the Cabildo of Gran Canaria, Jerónimo Saavedra, Mayor of the Las Palmas de Gran Canaria City Council, were also waiting.
At 1:50 p.m., the relatives of the victims arrived at the Military Base. A total of five, carrying small travel bags and with grief on their shoulders, declined to make statements because they preferred to meet with the rest of their families inside the Military Base.
A detachment formed by twenty Local Police officers paid tribute to the coffins of one of the young women from San Matero, a direct relative of the body in this municipality. These, in their vehicles, escorted the coffin during the road journey to the funeral home where the bodies will be veiled.
Before this flight, the bodies of the family from Arucas who died in the accident arrived in Gran Canaria. The victims are Pedro Pablo Afonso Marrero, Jorge Afonso Sosa, Miguel Afonso Sosa and María del Carmen Sosa Hernández.
This afternoon, the arrival of the coffin of Inés Placeres Pérez, from Telde, is scheduled. With this, there are ten bodies that will have arrived on the Island during today and 30 since Thursday. In total there were 154 fatalities in the plane crash that occurred last Wednesday, of which 72 come from or reside in the Canary Islands.
With these data, there are 52 bodies that remain to arrive in Gran Canaria, depending on how the body identification work develops. In this sense, the work carried out by family members in Madrid in coordination with the forensic police is very important. The Government Delegation confirmed today that the Citizen Information Office of Gran Canaria is operational, and has already begun to assist the families of the victims.
