The Civil Guard surprises two fishermen with prohibited fishing gear

The Civil Guard of the Maritime Detachment of Fuerteventura reported on June 23 a professional fishing boat for fishing with prohibited gill nets, more specifically the cazonal method in Lanzarote. The two sailors, aged 59 and 25, have several infractions for similar events.

The Civil Guard became aware of the events since citizens had been warning of the frequent use of the practice of gill net fishing. The agents located a professional boat occupied by two people in the area between Punta del Gallo and Los Lomillos, on the west coast of Lanzarote. From land, the agents observed how they made several casts with gill nets and then proceeded to collect the fish to store it on board.

Once the fishing boat docked at the port of La Santa, the Civil Guard of Fiscal and Borders of Costa Teguise identified the occupants of the boat and proceeded to inspect it, verifying that it carried several cazonales of about 50 meters in length and different classes of fish from the surrounding marine fauna, about 70 kilograms.

Therefore, the Civil Guard processed the corresponding complaint in accordance with the Regulations of the Canary Islands Fisheries Law (Decree 182/2004) which states in its article 17. D) that fishing with gill nets is prohibited, with the exceptions of some areas in the islands of Gran Canaria, Tenerife and La Palma, cited in Annex I of the Regulations.

Possible sanctions

In Law 17/2003, of April 10, on Fisheries of the Canary Islands, the use or possession on board of prohibited, unauthorized or irregular arts or devices is a serious infraction included in article 70.5. In turn, article 76.b) states that serious infractions will be sanctioned with a fine of 301 to 60,000 euros.
