The complaints of farmers about the thefts suffered by several crops in the municipality of Teguise in recent weeks have paid off. This week the mayor, Oswaldo Betancort, and the Councilor for Security, Miguel Ángel Jiménez, met with them at the Socio-Cultural Center of Los Valles. The meeting was also attended by representatives of the Civil Guard and the Local Police of Teguise, who explained to the farmers that they have already organized working groups between both bodies to prevent these crimes.
In the case of Los Valles, according to several farmers, with the potato harvesting season, small thefts of the crop are taking place, and the residents themselves had created "vigilance groups". However, at the meeting they were "totally discouraged from this measure" and promised that now the working groups of the Civil Guard and the Local Police will be in charge of monitoring the affected areas.
The affected parties were also asked to report any theft, "no matter how small, because if they do not record these crimes, the Local Police and the Civil Guard lack information and cannot avoid a situation they are unaware of." In addition, with the complaints, they "would ensure that in the following crop harvesting campaigns, the area would be specially monitored, avoiding many infractions."
According to the City Council, these working groups will place special emphasis on the cultivation areas, such as Los Valles, Teguise and the jable lands, among others.
The mayor insisted that what the residents have to do is call the security forces when they see "any suspicious attitude" and "never act, because they could be in danger." He also recalled that "currently there are hardly any registered complaints, the last one dates from February 28, and that is where citizens can also collaborate."
On the night of this same Wednesday, according to the City Council, the Local Police already received "an alert call, due to the presence of a car prowling crops, which withdrew from the area upon the arrival of the security agents."
