The Cabildo of Lanzarote has expressed its dismay at the death of at least eight people after a boat capsized a few meters from the coast of Órzola on Tuesday afternoon.

President María Dolores Corujo has expressed, on behalf of the Corporation and on her own, her deepest condolences to the families and friends of the victims, all of them men, of Maghreb origin, and between 20 and 30 years of age. “Unfortunately, our coasts have once again been the scene of a humanitarian drama that, unfortunately, has taken the lives of these young people who were only looking to find a better life and fulfill their dreams.”

The tragic event took place on Tuesday evening in the northern town of Órzola when a boat, type patera, capsized into the sea after colliding with the breakwater. In total, 28 survivors and 8 deaths have been counted. The bodies of the last victims were rescued by firefighters, with the help of the Helimer helicopter and the Arrecife Local Police drone, during the night and early this morning.

The search operation for possible survivors or victims continued on Wednesday morning, coordinated by the Lanzarote Security and Emergency Consortium. The means deployed are the Helimer helicopter, the Civil Guard, Local Police, the Canary Police, Emerlan, the Red Cross and the Lanzarote Fire Department.

Dolores Corujo wanted to thank “the commendable work carried out by the emergency teams that went to the scene, as well as the residents of Órzola who, in the first moments after the accident, did not hesitate to go to the place to help the victims.”

“Our people have demonstrated, once again, their solidarity and empathy with those who need it most, which demonstrates the greatness of our people,” Corujo highlighted.
