National Police agents have arrested a passenger in Gran Canaria as the alleged perpetrator of a crime against public health, after locating one kilogram of methamphetamine hidden in a checked suitcase in his luggage.

The intervention took place on May 29, within the framework of Operation HEISENBERG and the prevention and control efforts that agents permanently carry out in ports and airports to guarantee the safety of transport and prevent the introduction of narcotic substances into the archipelago.

The events took place after the arrival of a flight from Madrid, when the agents carried out the corresponding inspections on passengers and luggage.

As a result of these actions, the narcotic substance was detected, and its carrier was immediately arrested and the drug seized.

Methamphetamine, popularly known as "Tina," "Crystal," or "Meth," is a synthetic drug with a potent stimulant effect on the central nervous system, the consumption of which can cause serious health consequences.

Police investigations confirm that a large part of the synthetic drug trafficking destined for the Canary Islands is carried out by transporting it from different points on the European continent, mainly using regular air connections.

For this reason, the controls carried out by the National Police at airports constitute an essential tool for detecting and neutralizing the entry of this type of illicit substance into the archipelago.

The detainee, along with the seized drug and the police proceedings carried out, was placed at the disposal of the competent judicial authority, with the investigation remaining open to clarify all aspects related to the events.
