Environmental agents of the Cabildo de Lanzarote and firefighters removed a longline that was on the north coast of the island this Tuesday, according to the Emergency Consortium.
A longline is a type of tackle used in artisanal fishing and there are two types: bottom longline, which rests on the seabed, and surface longline, which floats adrift in the sea.
The firefighters received the notice around 1:25 PM, so they headed to the location. Once there, the personnel contacted the Marine Reserve and proceeded to jointly remove this longline from the sea.
With the help of a knife, they managed to remove all the material that was floating and on the rocks. According to them, only a piece that was attached to the bottom and formed a cylinder to the surface was left, so it was decided to mark it.
As it is a Marine Reserve, the law establishes that the use of this type of fishing tackle is totally prohibited, as it is a non-selective fishing gear with great destructive capacity.
