The Haría City Council deeply regrets the new humanitarian drama that took place this Tuesday in the northern municipality, when a boat capsized upon reaching the dock of Órzola with 36 migrants on board, killing at least eight of its occupants.

"And the residents of the coastal town experienced one of their most tragic nights in the face of the impotence of what was happening in front of their houses, where several people lost their lives in their struggle to reach the European continent from Africa," they point out from the Consistory.

“It is inconceivable that situations like this continue to occur in the 21st century and that a large number of people risk their lives to achieve a better future for themselves and their families,” says the new mayor of Haría, Chaxiraxi Niz, who expressed his sorrow for the fatal victims.

The municipal councilor wanted to highlight the commendable effort of all the security and emergency forces, both island and local, and especially the solidarity and dedication of the residents who collaborated in the rescue, who did not hesitate to jump into the sea when they heard the screams when the barge collided with the breakwater of the dock.

“I would like to thank the residents of Órzola who, selflessly and altruistically, have collaborated in everything possible to assist these people and have once again shown the human quality of our town,” says the first mayor.
