The Local Police of Teguise have arrested four people 'in flagrante delicto' while they were digging in the sand to hide 75 kilos of hashish. The police action, according to a press release, occurred this Sunday at 8:01 a.m. when a phone call was received at the Police Headquarters alerting about "the arrival by boat to the beach of the town of Caleta de Famara with at least ten immigrants".
Two vehicles from the Teguise Police patrol went to the area. There they observed a boat stranded at the beginning of Famara beach, in the area called 'El Codito', as well as some immigrants in the dunes in line with the boat that had landed.
Immediately, according to the statement, the agents initiated a chase on foot in that direction, where four of the people sighted were digging in the sand with their hands, who fled on foot when they were surprised, although they were finally arrested by the agents, along with a young woman (possibly a minor) who was a few meters away trying to pick up items of clothing from a backpack.
Five sealed containers
They continue explaining from the Police, that "next to the four people there were a total of five plastic containers closed and sealed with insulating tape, so the acting agents suspected that these could contain some type of narcotic substance. After proceeding to open them, they discovered small bundles of hashish sealed with plastic in the shape of a brick, which totaled 75 kilograms, as well as a plastic box, which contained inside navigation devices (GPS), a hand compass, three mobile phones, a telephone book, a passport issued by the Kingdom of Morocco, all also sealed in plastic".
For this reason, "the four individuals who were digging to try to hide the drugs in the presence of the police forces in the area were arrested for an alleged drug trafficking crime, who could not be identified at the time as they were undocumented and did not speak Spanish".
Finally, 13 people were arrested for alleged violation of the Immigration Law, who were placed at the disposal of the Judicial Police of Costa Teguise, for the instruction of the corresponding procedures and the investigation of the facts.
The mayor of Teguise, Oswaldo Betancort, has congratulated the Police force, especially the intervening agents, "for the work they carry out continuously for the benefit of the citizens". Likewise, he has referred to the vital importance of the coordination of all the Security Forces and Corps of the island, "and of course, to the invaluable citizen collaboration to communicate facts or situations about allegedly criminal acts, always with all the guarantees of confidentiality".
