The couple who had an accident this Tuesday falling inside one of the mills of the old salt mines of Puerto Naos in Arrecife, are already at home. The two young people, 17 and 16 years old, were evacuated to the Molina Orosa hospital for serious injuries, and on Tuesday night they were discharged.

The boy presented a severe traumatic brain injury and the 16-year-old girl presented multiple injuries of a serious nature. Once at the scene, the firefighters accessed with a height rescue team to the injured for a first assessment where both presented contusions and various lacerations. Subsequently and with the help of a hoist and a caving stretcher, they first evacuated the young man because he was the one with the most serious injuries and later the injured woman.

The mayor of Arrecife, Yonathan de León, has communicated the news through his Facebook account. "Last night I received a hopeful message. The family of the couple, 17 and 16 years old, who fell into a well next to the Puerto Naos salt mine mill, informed me that they had been discharged from the hospital", he detailed on the social network.

This is how the accident happened

The manager of the Emergency Consortium, Enrique Espinosa, explained in an interview this Wednesday on Radio Lanzarote-Onda Cero, how the events happened that night. The two young people decided to enter the mill believing it was an accessible place. "They thought it was a place they could enter," Espinosa stressed.

It was the boy who fell inside first and then, it was the girl who, alerted by the noise, approached and suffered the same fate as her companion, falling "at least eight meters". Both were unconscious for hours. "They were unconscious and when they woke up they called 1-1-2", he revealed.

The two suffered serious injuries, although the boy is the one who got the worst of it. "She fell on top of him, the boy's impact was quite strong," Espinosa revealed. "The boy lost consciousness a little when he went up, but thank goodness they are alive," Enrique thanked.

Rapid response from Emergencies and the City Council

The firefighters, the Local and National Police went to the area to act quickly and effectively. There were eight firefighters who traveled to rescue the young people. "We spent two hours to get them out," he explains about their work. A complicated action that ended with a happy ending. "Two went down to assess the situation and talk to them," he acknowledges.

In addition, the mayor of Arrecife also wanted to be present during the rescue and accompany the troops and the young people until they were taken out. "When I learned that night of this rescue, I went to the area. I have remained in permanent contact with the families to learn about the evolution and make myself available for whatever they needed. The coordination and rapid response of all the bodies and troops that participated in the rescue, including agents of the Local Police of Arrecife and Civil Protection of Arrecife, allowed to save these teenagers", added de León.

This is how he has communicated through social networks that both are resting in their homes after the accident. "They are in their homes recovering from this great scare in their lives", the mayor has revealed. "They are already in their homes with their families", he concluded with joy.
