National Police agents belonging to the Technological Crimes Group of the Local Brigade of Judicial Police of the Telde Police Station, in Gran Canaria, arrested two people last September as alleged perpetrators of the crimes of fraud, forgery of a commercial document, and identity theft, after using another person's identity to buy a high-end phone and contract several phone lines.
The investigation began in April 2025 after a citizen reported that a telecommunications company was claiming 1,702.04 euros from him for services he had never contracted.
The agents discovered that the suspects had used a DNI lost by the victim to impersonate her and go to a commercial establishment in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, where they managed to finance a mobile phone and phone lines in their name.
To avoid being discovered, those involved fraudulently opened a bank account in the name of a third person, which they used to direct debit the payments for the contracted services.
However, the receipts began to be returned due to insufficient funds or cancellation, which ended up generating the debt that was subsequently claimed by the victim.
The mobile phone passed through various establishments in Gran Canaria and Tenerife
In addition, the mobile phone obtained by deception was sold on the second-hand market, passing through various intermediaries and establishments specializing in the buying and selling of electronic devices in Gran Canaria and Tenerife.
During the investigations, the agents analyzed the signatures on the contracts, tracked the telephone communications, and checked the device data and the movements made by the suspects.
These actions made it possible to identify and locate the two alleged perpetrators, who were finally arrested.
Once the police actions were completed, the proceedings were sent to the competent judicial authority and the Prosecutor's Office.
Citizen Collaboration
The National Police reminds the public of the importance of reporting the loss or theft of identity documents as soon as possible, as well as periodically reviewing bank transactions and contracts made in their name. Any citizen who becomes aware of criminal acts can report it through 091 or go to police facilities.
