The special controls by the Arrecife Local Police to enforce the rules for scooter riders have made it possible to identify 54 riders who were violating the General Traffic Directorate's rules on driving these PMVs.
In just one preventive control, carried out on the afternoon and evening of March 18, the Arrecife Local Police officers fined 54 scooter riders for violating the rules by circulating in unauthorized areas of the city of Arrecife.
The General Traffic Directorate (DGT) regulates that these PMVs -Personal Mobility Vehicles- must respect all traffic regulations, and cannot travel on sidewalks and pedestrian areas. Scooters must circulate on the road, and in the same direction of traffic reflected on the roads. The maximum authorized speed cannot exceed 25 km/h.
The mayor of the city, Yonathan de León, directly responsible for the Local Police, had asked the local agents to intensify control over the circulation of scooters in the city, as there is evidence of a proliferation of these mobility systems, and that, on many occasions, underage drivers do not respect the rules established for circulating in PMVs. The DGT reminds that since January 22 of last year 2024, PMVs that are marketed must be certified for use.
After these preventive controls established by the Local Police in different areas of the capital of Lanzarote, the agents seized 8 scooters that were circulating without the required technical approval, and in other cases, to guarantee payment to non-resident offenders.
The Arrecife Local Police Corps periodically carries out preventive controls in various areas of the city to reinforce road safety and for citizens to perceive that the rules are being enforced, for the safety of all citizens.
