An angelshark has appeared dead around 12 noon this Saturday on Playa Blanca, specifically on Afre beach where the Papagayo Arena hotel is located.
It was a local resident who found the animal and notified the authorities. Agents of the Civil Guard and Civil Protection have traveled to the scene. They are waiting for the arrival of the veterinarian to take samples.
This species is part of the most threatened fish on the planet (Squatina squatina), which is listed as a critically endangered species by the IUCN and as endangered in the Spanish Catalog of Threatened Species.
The angelshark or angel fish is a species of shark belonging to the squatinidae family.
It can reach 2.5 meters, where its flat shape with a wide and thick body stands out. Its coloration is grayish brown with small and very numerous darker markings. However, in the youngest specimens this coloration is lighter. Its head is oval and its eyes, without eyelids, are located on the dorsal part. The mouth is protrusible and is located at the terminal base with a jaw full of small sharp teeth. Located on its flat trunk, its elongated and triangular pectoral fins also stand out.
