A worker from a company in Playa Blanca suffered this Wednesday a workplace accident in which he ended up losing an arm.

The events took place in the company Hermanos Tavío Santana, owned by the former PIL councilor, Juan Lorenzo Tavío, who was also a witness to the incident.

According to Tavío, the worker is a mechanic from the company who was doing "maintenance work" on "a conveyor belt." "He turned around for a moment to talk to me, who was 10 centimeters away from him, he had his hand on a roller that was spinning, and when he turned his body to talk to me, it caught his hand," he detailed in statements to La Voz, in which he attributed the accident to "a lapse" by the worker.

After the incident, the worker was transferred to the Molina Orosa Hospital, where he is still admitted. "Yesterday afternoon I was able to speak with him and he is not in any serious condition or in any danger," said the owner of the company, who nevertheless confirmed that the employee has lost his arm.

He has also confirmed that the Labor Inspectorate has already gone to the company to investigate what happened. "We ourselves notified the mining services yesterday, which is the competent body for that type of machinery, which is registered. They came yesterday afternoon, they did an inspection which is normal, and we also made the record of the company's risk prevention that we have," Tavío pointed out, who nevertheless said he was not worried, insisting that the accident was "a lapse." "We take great care in the safety of workers," he asserted.

Specifically, the injured worker is 44 years old and, according to Tavío, has "a lot of experience in this type of machine." "He started with us when he was about 20 years old, he was with us for 12 years, then he went to a workshop where he worked as a mechanical manager and now he was working with us again," said the owner of the company, stating that after what happened the worker will be "relocated" to another job.
