A British Airways plane had to make an emergency landing this Thursday afternoon at the Guacimeta airport. According to Aena, the plane had taken off at 4:30 p.m. from the Lanzarote aerodrome bound for London Gatwick with about 180 people on board. However, "shortly after", just 45 minutes later, it requested to return and land because it had detected "smoke in the cabin and inside the plane."
The ship then made an emergency landing and evacuated the passengers, who were taken to the airport. The airport firefighters went to the plane and boarded. According to Aena, they were "checking everything", but found "nothing abnormal". "The commander insisted that there had been smoke", however. Thus, after the firefighters left, a mechanical review of the plane was carried out. "At the end of the review, they decided not to leave", they relate from the airport authority, pointing out that the passengers were taken to "a hotel".
Aena emphasizes that this episode did not cause any "incidents" on other flights and "there was no need to close the runway". "When there is an emergency landing, priority is given to that plane to land and if there is one waiting to land, it has to wait for that one to land, but that does not mean that the runway is closed, the plane is parked in an area that is enabled for it. The review is done there and the runway continues to function", they explain.
