A leatherback turtle (Dermochelys coriacea) has been found dead off the coast of Mala this Saturday morning.
The Environment Agents went to the stranding site. Their main objective was to inspect the specimen and determine the possible causes of its death. In addition, they were in charge of taking biometric data, an essential procedure in these cases to collect valuable information that can contribute to the conservation of this species.
The leatherback turtle is the largest of all species of sea turtles and is listed as vulnerable by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. Events like this underscore the importance of the work of the Environment Agents in the protection and conservation of our marine biodiversity.
It is hoped that the data collected during this sad incident can shed light on the threats faced by these majestic marine creatures and help formulate effective strategies for their conservation.
