The Cabildo of Lanzarote, through the Portal Anquialino Project of Geopark Lanzarote and Chinijo Archipelago, announces the upcoming call for the Citizen Science Days in Los Jameos del Agua, an initiative free of charge open to the entire society that seeks to bring science and environmental conservation closer to the population in a participatory and educational way.
This action provides data to the Conservation Plan of Munidopsis polymorpha, popularly known as 'jameíto', and within the dissemination lines of the Geopark, a natural space of incalculable value managed by the Area led by Councilor Samuel Martín: "These days represent an extraordinary opportunity for the population to get directly involved in the protection of our natural heritage. Lanzarote is home to a unique ecosystem in the world and we need everyone's collaboration to guarantee its preservation," said the councilor.
During the activity, the participants will become citizen scientists, joining the count of the 'jameíto', the small endemic crustacean that inhabits the underground waters of Los Jameos del Agua.
Unique ecosystems
The anchialine ecosystems of Lanzarote harbor exceptional biodiversity, including endemic species such as Munidopsis polymorpha, a small crustacean known as 'jameíto', which inhabits the underground waters of Los Jameos del Agua. However, the fragility of this habitat makes continuous monitoring necessary to assess the status of its populations and guarantee its conservation.
With this purpose, this day is designed for the whole society in general to actively participate in the counting of individuals of Munidopsis polymorpha, contributing with real data to the Conservation Plan of the species. Through this activity, they will not only learn about anchialine ecosystems and their biodiversity, but they will become part of the scientific process, providing key information for the preservation of this unique environment.
In addition to the practical part, the day will include a theoretical session on the importance of these ecosystems, promoting environmental awareness and critical thinking of the students.
"Citizen science is a tool for social transformation. When we understand the value of what surrounds us, a deeper alliance is born for its defense," added the councilor.
The Cabildo invites the general population, students and educational centers to participate in this unique and enriching experience, which combines education, science and environmental awareness in one of the most emblematic spaces of the island.
Activity details
The activity will take place in Los Jameos del Agua from 08.45 to 11.30 hours on April 19 and 26 and on May 3 and 17. The contact number is 633 530 983.
