Uga dressed up this Friday, May 15, to honor the figure of its patron saint, San Isidro Labrador, and did so by participating in the solemn mass presided over by the parish priest of Yaiza and archpriest of Lanzarote, Yonathan Almeida, to then fulfill one of the most popular expressions of devotion, the procession through the streets of the town alongside the image of the Saint in the company of the Municipal Band of Yaiza, directed by maestro Giovanni Noda Niz.

On this day of a mix of faith, tradition, culture, and spirituality, Uga, an agricultural and livestock town, especially linked to the most important camel herd in Europe, so much so that about forty families from the southern town make a living from camel rides in Timanfaya National Park, offered prayers for the maintenance and progress of the primary sector, the sustainable and productive activity that translates into the well-being of an entire town, the second most populated in the municipality of Yaiza after Playa Blanca.

The Big Day of Uga also had a heartfelt moment to remember with affection and emotion the deceased neighbors of the town who lived in community, contributed to the development of the town, and intensely lived the patron saint festivities that the people of Uga, integrated with visitors from other municipalities of Lanzarote, have celebrated over these last two weeks. The mayor of Yaiza, Óscar Noda, and the councilor for Festivities, Daniel Medina, led the institutional representation.

The mass was celebrated in the open air, in the church square, because the temple, affected in its roof by water leaks, has been closed since last January due to the danger of falling debris. Once the eucharist was finished, the same parish priest wanted to clarify the state of the building, motivated by unfounded information spread by some politicians in the media.

Yonathan Alemeida recalled that the building began to be erected in the early seventies with the effort of priests and especially of the town's neighbors who contributed to its construction. The City Council, the parish priest emphasized, "does not have within its responsibilities to repair or carry out any work, as it is private property, even if it is for public use." The Diocese of the Canary Islands has been duly informed of the situation from the outset and has already placed the relevant evaluations in the hands of technicians in order to carry out the necessary actions to resolve the incident.

After the solemn mass and procession, the town of Uga enjoyed the concert by singer-songwriter Gonzalo Hermida. The festive venue enjoyed the lyrics and music of the young artist from Cadiz who walks triumphantly across stages in Spain and whom Uga invited for the culmination of its San Isidro Labrador celebrations.
