The Torrelavega Society of Culture, Recreation and Sports has recognized the social and cultural work of the Mararía Association for Women on its 30th anniversary and the Los Campesinos Folk Group for its 60 years of life.
The event took place on Thursday night with the celebration of the magnificent concert performed by the teachers and students of the Insular Center of Musical Education of Lanzarote (CIEM).
The event began with the presentation of commemorative plaques to the Mararía Association by the vice president, Luis González, to the vice president Carmen Delia Reyes. The Los Campesinos Folk Group was presented by the president of the Torrelavega Society, Toñín Ramos, to the director Miguel Ángel Corujo. Vice President and Director thanked the distinction received from a Society like El Torrelavega, which for both is a cultural reference in Lanzarote and the Canary Islands.
Next, the concert began with the performance of the CIEM Brass Band, directed by Professor Iván Curbelo and composed of a total of 16 members, men and women who played their instruments very finely, trumpets, flugelhorn, trombone, euphonium, tuba, horns and percussion, performing Then and Now by Stevie Wonder with arrangements by Robert Smith. Also Around the world in 80 days by Otto Schwartz, an performance that was highly applauded by the public that filled the permitted capacity.
Secondly, the four members of the saxophonist quartet directed by Professor Antonio Robles took the stage, performing Swing Shift by the composer Lennie Niehaus, the favorite of film director Clint Eatwood. Lennie Niehaus was in charge of putting most of the soundtracks to Eastwood's films such as The Bridges of Madison County, Pocahontas 2, Unforgiven, etc., winning the Oscar for best soundtrack. The applause was heard again to reward the saxophonists.
Next it was the turn for the Trío del Aula del Metal Grabe formed by Luis Jesús, Javier and María José performing Tango Argentino, a single composition that was also rewarded with applause.
The final touch to the concert was given by the CIEM parranda, directed by Professor Yinay de León formed by men, women and young people who conquered the public with a magnificent and varied performance inspired by Canarian airs, folía, isa, sorondongo, among others, mostly with lyrics by the Master of Salines Víctor Fernández Gopar "El Salinero", ending with a poem masterfully interpreted with lyrics by the Lanzarote poet Jaime Quesada.
With the applause of the public, standing up, the final point was put to a day where once again culture was the standard-bearer of the night. Finally, Alfonso Duro Cabezón, director of the Torrelavega Society, presented a plaque as a thank you to the professor and director Iván Curbelo.
