The 'El morro' roundabout in Uga, which gives access to the wine-growing area of La Geria from the south of the island, proudly displays since this Saturday, June 15, the work 'Reflejos de La Geria' by Isidro Vilñoly Machín, a tribute that the local artist and the Yaiza City Council wanted to offer “to the winegrowers and winemakers for their contribution to the creation and conservation of the landscape of La Geria”, said the southern president Óscar Noda during its inauguration, in which he was accompanied by the author, councilors of the local Corporation and representatives of the Cabildo of Lanzarote headed by the Minister of Public Works, Jacobo Medina.

“Every day I pass by here and I always kept looking because something was missing here that would represent the entrance to La Geria”, commented the author during the inauguration, “and turning around in my head I was putting together this idea, I made a model and presented it to the City Council to see if they liked it”.

The mayor of Yaiza, who helped the sculptor to uncover the sculptural work together with the rest of the public representatives, says that it is a pride that a resident of Uga is the author of this work that values our landscape and the hard work and sacrifice of an entire town. "Congratulations to Isidro Viñoly, thanking him for the altruistic gesture he has had in designing this
sculpture, and invite him to continue making proposals like this one”, stressed the mayor.

With three meters thirty high and about 300 kilos in weight, the sculptural ensemble is formed by a vine with its bunch of grapes and a large lizard that peeks out from the side. “It is made of iron and practically everything is handmade based on hammering, molding and welding”, detailed the author.

The Councilor for Landscape and Food Sovereignty of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Samuel Martín, pointed out that “there is no better day than today, when the Wine Run is resumed, to inaugurate a sculpture dedicated to agriculture, to grapes and to the work of the farmers of La Geria”.

Jacobo Medina, for his part, indicated that “I only have words of gratitude, not only to the sculptor, Isidro Viñoly, but also to the Yaiza City Council for betting on these works that are part of our culture and identity”.

“It has been a brilliant job and done against the clock”, congratulated the Councilor for Public Works of Yaiza, Ángel Lago, to its author Isidro Viñoly, while thanking the Cabildo “for having worked hand in hand to be able to obtain the pertinent authorizations in time” and to the municipal workers who have been in charge of its installation “for the rapid action to adapt the roundabout, the placement of the new rofe and the concrete base, because they have made it possible for today to be a special day, being able to inaugurate this beautiful sculpture prior to the start of a race as ours as is the Wine Run”.

The event was also attended by family and friends of this sculptor, a native of Uga, who says he feels more like a craftsman than an artist because he comes from a family with an extensive and recognized artisan career.
