The morning of last Sunday once again became a beautiful encounter between the history, culture, and identity of our people thanks to the performance offered by the Agrupación Folclórica Guagime de Tahíche in La Villa de Teguise. There, where the cobblestone streets hold the memory of generations and where hundreds of visitors converge every Sunday, attracted by the charm of the Historic Site of the former capital of Lanzarote, the soul of Canarian folklore resonated strongly.
At 11:30 AM, the members of Guagime arrived with excitement reflected on their faces at the Plaza de la Constitución, affectionately known by all as Plaza de Los Leones. Little by little, tourists and visitors began to fill the surroundings, attracted by the unmistakable sounds of traditional instruments and by the curiosity to discover one of the most authentic cultural expressions of the Canary Islands archipelago.
From the first chords of the timples, guitars, lutes, bone castanets, and drum, magnificently led by Professor Fefo Pérez, the square transformed into a true showcase of traditional Canarian culture. The dance troupe filled the historic venue with color and elegance while singers and musicians performed with feeling some of the most representative pieces of the folklore of Lanzarote and the rest of the Canary Islands, transmitting to the audience the richness of a legacy that has been preserved from generation to generation.
Each isa, folia, malagueña, or seguidilla performed was much more than a musical performance; they were a declaration of love for our roots, a tribute to those who preceded us, and an invitation to new generations to continue feeling pride in an identity that is expressed through music, dance, traditional clothing, and customs inherited from our elders.
The numerous tourists and visitors followed the performance with great interest and admiration. The continuous applause that rewarded each performance mingled with the incessant sound of cameras and mobile phones that immortalized each dance, each melody, and each moment of a morning in which Canarian identity became Lanzarote's best calling card to those who visit us from different corners of the world.
With more than twenty years of experience, the Guagime de Tahíche Folk Group continues to carry out admirable and essential work in the conservation, dissemination, and defense of the cultural heritage of the Canary Islands. Behind each performance, there are many hours of rehearsal, effort, sacrifice, and dedication from committed men and women who, driven solely by love for their land, keep the flame of our traditions alive so that they are never lost over time. Thanks to them, the legacy received from our ancestors continues to walk firmly towards the future.
Once again, Guagime conquered the audience with the simplicity, artistic quality, and deep feeling it conveys in each of its performances, demonstrating that folklore remains one of the greatest symbols of identity of the Canarian people.
The event will once again have special prominence next Friday, July 17, when the Guagime Folk Group celebrates its anticipated XV Festival, as part of the patron saint festivals of Santiago Apóstol and Santa Ana in Tahíche. Under the motto "Like in the Old Days," they will share the stage with the El Chorro del Farrobillo Folk Group and the dance troupe of the Acoidán Group, both from Santa Úrsula, Tenerife. During the event, the "Silver Insignia," the group's highest recognition, will be presented to the esteemed neighbor Ramira Cabrera Pérez, as a tribute to her commitment and connection to the people of Tahíche.
Because as long as groups like Guagime exist, the heart of traditional and popular Canarian culture will continue to beat strongly. They remind us that a people who preserve their songs, their dances, and their customs keep their history alive and strengthen their identity. Their work constitutes an example of dedication and love for the Canary Islands, a legacy that deserves the recognition, respect, and support of all society.
