Two straights, two chicanes, a ramp, and a devilish curve define the urban circuit, 500 meters long, that the town of Yaiza premiered this Sunday with its Crazy Car Race. Eleven artisanal vehicles took the start in the first Yaiza Grand Prix amidst the anticipation of a crowd that ended up roaring with laughter at the ingenuity of the artisanal vehicle designs and the speed they reached on the main straight, the fastest meters of the track, between the squares of La Alameda and Los Remedios.
Young and old left delighted with this proposal that the Yaiza Festival Commission incorporated into the patron saint festivities of Los Remedios. The sensations are very positive, due to the participation of the drivers and the car designs, and everything indicates that the Crazy Car Race will have a long run in the town's future festivities.
The event is also a sustainable competition with handcrafted vehicles, without engines, powered by inertia, and with groundbreaking designs and shapes. The fun was not long in coming, and one spectator said that engineer Adrian Newey, the F1 guru, should take inspiration from the designs seen in Yaiza to enhance his successes.
The organization, piloted by Pancho Ortiz, an artisan, nativity scene maker, municipal worker from the Sports Department, and town resident, decided the podium considering the times of the two timed runs of each vehicle on the circuit and the rating of its design. Within this regulatory framework, the top three finishers were Omar Perdomo, driving the car (truck) ‘Eso es lo demás’; David Rodríguez and Iván Medina with ‘Novios enredadores’; and Gustavo Torres, a driver from Femés, with his car ‘Laya’, whose design evoked a palm tree.
The reliability and speed of the winning car, and Omar Perdomo's skill at the wheel, were surprising, but the public had a great time with the exhibition of the eleven vehicles. The mayor of Yaiza, Óscar Noda, and the Councilor for Festivities, Daniel Medina, who presided over the awards ceremony, thanked the Yaiza Festival Commission and each of the participants for their enthusiasm and good work in offering a day full of ingenuity and fun.
Daniel Medina welcomed the event by driving the zero car without entering the competition. The party continued in the square, enlivened by the live performance of the band Defecto Venturi, while the big Yaiza family recharged their batteries in the food stalls dressed as pit stops.
