The César Manrique Foundation (FCM) will host next Thursday, March 9 at 7:30 p.m. in the José Saramago room, located in La Plazuela de Arrecife, the conference entitled "Web3, crypto-bros and biases: new technologies continue to exclude women", given by the journalist specialized in science and technology, Marta del Amo. With her presentation, the institution will inaugurate the program of cultural activities for 2023.
During her speech, Del Amo will present the technical and ethical challenges faced by some of the innovations that have garnered the most headlines in recent years, such as cryptocurrencies, the concept of Web3 or the tokenized economy. And she will explain how, in her opinion, "they are becoming vectors of inequality as they are fundamentally dominated by young men".
In this sense, Del Amo will address the importance of diversity in technology development and decision-making teams through harmful examples such as the biased algorithms of artificial intelligence, whose presence and influence in our lives is increasing.
This conference is included within the reflection space "Borders and directions of progress", a forum in which Ramón Margalef, José Manuel Naredo, Federico Aguilera Klink, Fernando Savater, Jorge Riechmann, Rafael Argullol, Ulrich Beck, Marc Augé, Susan George and Daniel Innerarity, among others, have already participated. This forum is intended to review the idea of progress contemplated from different multidisciplinary perspectives.
Marta del Amo is a science and technology journalist. Coordinator of "Retina", the technological media of Grupo PRISA. She has worked in national media such as the newspaper "Público" or "El Español" and international media ("MIT Technology Review" in Spanish or "Forbes"), as well as in public institutions such as the Communication Department of the CSIC. Del Amo combines her facet as a journalist with public appearances as a speaker and master of ceremonies at events focused on innovation, technology and science.
