Two enormous Canary figures of music said goodbye on this Thursday, May 15th to the patron saint festivities of Uga with a long-flight concert that exposed, through the music of Benito Cabrera and the voice of Cristina Ramos, a whole vision of what it is to be Canarian and the inseparable cultural connection of the Islands with Latin America, music from both sides of the Atlantic to lift the public gathered in the fairgrounds of the town.
Accompanied by a band of four musicians, Benito Cabrera, talent with Yaiza roots, in Femés, to be more precise, and Cristina Ramos, a very consecrated Gran Canaria voice, made an exciting journey through hits from the popular songbook of the Canary Islands and lyrics born in the new continent that are universal heritage.
In that proximity of feelings made music, the artists offered, among other pieces, Canary folías, José Vélez's hit Latin American Canary and 'Gracias a la vida' by the remembered Chilean author Violeta Parra, emotions to give and share.
Talent and versatility. Cabrera, Ramos and his band also gave in Uga Un beso y una flor, popularized by Nino Bravo, and another recognized song full of feelings like No dudaría, by Antonio Flores, also evoking Benito Cabrera the content of his letter of rejection of violence, "in difficult moments that the world is experiencing", before the interpretation of Cristina Ramos: "...learn from experience, but never, never again use violence..."
More poetry was needed to close the concert, and with it, the Uga festivities, and the choice could not have been better. The powerful Hallelujah by the Canadian poet and composer Leonard Cohen sounded in the town, and surely far beyond its borders. It came from the soul of Cristina Ramos's big voice, the public open-mouthed and wanting to hear one more song, pleased, and delighted to have been able to enjoy a superb show.
"The Uga festivities are ending, the events of the end of May for Canary Islands Day are approaching and in June we have the Las Breñas festivities, so we invite the people of the municipality of Yaiza and Lanzarote to join us in these meetings where joy and brotherhood reign," adds the Councilor for Celebrations, Daniel Medina.
