The House of Culture “Agustín de la Hoz” of Arrecife inaugurated this Saturday, March 28, at 12:00 hours, the exhibition The depth of silence, by the Lanzarote artist Ildefonso Aguilar, a proposal that brings together a selection of pictorial, photographic and audiovisual work under the curatorship of Adonay Bermúdez.

Organized by the Culture Area of the Cabildo de Lanzarote, in collaboration with the Department of Culture of the Arrecife City Council, the exhibition offers a journey through different stages of the creator, combining pieces from well-known series with recent works.

The Minister of Culture of the Cabildo de Lanzarote, Jesús Machín Tavío, highlights that “this exhibition allows one to approach the trajectory of one of the most relevant creators of contemporary art in the Canary Islands, with a body of work that has managed to build its own language around the landscape.” In this sense, he underlines that “the work of Ildefonso Aguilar is placed in a context of national and international recognition, consolidating itself as a reference within artistic creation linked to the territory.”

For her part, the Councilor for Culture of Arrecife City Council, Abigail González, points out that this exhibition "reinforces the role of the “Agustín de la Hoz” House of Culture as a central space within the cultural life of Lanzarote." In this regard, she notes that Arrecife continues to work to bring quality proposals to the public, consolidating the center as a meeting point for art lovers."

The exhibition

Under the title The depth of silence, the exhibition proposes a look at the volcanic landscape from a personal and sustained perspective over time. Through painting, photography, and audiovisual language, Aguilar constructs a reading of the territory in which matter —stone, sand, or lava— acquires a meaning that goes beyond the geological.

The project is situated in a line of work developed by the artist since the seventies, focused on landscape as a sensory experience. More than representing a recognizable place, the work proposes a way of perceiving it, inviting a paused observation and a deeper relationship with the environment.

In the words of the commissioner, Adonay Bermúdez, Aguilar's work "is articulated from a direct relationship with matter, where texture and time become fundamental elements of a visual language that appeals to attention and silence".

The artist himself points out that his work responds to a way of understanding the landscape “as a territory that is felt before being understood”, highlighting the need to observe these spaces from a slower and more conscious disposition.
