The residents of the town of Tahíche celebrated the festival of their Patron Saint, Santiago Apóstol, in style. On such a special day, the small hermitage could not accommodate all the parishioners who came to honor the Patron Saint due to the large number of attendees.
At 7:00 p.m., the celebration of the Eucharist began, presided over by the parish priest of Teguise, Juan Manuel Molina, assisted by Norberto Medina, parish priest of Haría, and Daniel Romero, newly ordained deacon. Many devotees had to follow the celebration of the Eucharist outside the hermitage through a public address system.
The songs were led by Fina de León, with the participation of the entire assembly. For his part, the homily, based on the life of the Apostle Santiago, was preached by Deacon Daniel Romero. After the Eucharist, the procession began, led by the municipal music band of Teguise, Teguiband, directed by Professor Tito González. The image of Santiago Apóstol followed on the shoulders of porters, men and women from Tahíche who took turns during the route and, as tradition dictates, on this day the image of Nuestra Señora del Carmen also goes out in procession.
Tahíche was also a town with a maritime tradition. In times of drought, many men sought the sustenance of their families aboard sardine boats when fishing was the main engine of the Lanzarote economy. The celebrating priests, municipal authorities, headed by the mayor Olivia Duque, and many parishioners who toured the main streets of the town also participated in the processional cortege.
Upon arriving at the small hermitage, the Municipal Music Band performed some processional compositions in front of the images, closing the day dedicated to the Patron Saint Santiago Apóstol while the parish priest gave the Special Blessing to all those present.
