The events planned in Playa Honda for this Friday, June 23rd, on the occasion of San Juan's Eve, are suspended. As announced by the San Bartolomé City Council, the technical reports issued by the Ministry of Ecological Transition, Fight against Climate Change and Territorial Planning of the Government of the Canary Islands, Nature Protection Service (Seprona) and Cabildo of Lanzarote "oblige the cancellation of the events" due to the possible effects that bonfires could have on the Kentish plover and its reproduction process, whose nucleus is located on this coast.
This is an endangered species of bird classified as vulnerable with a breeding area on the coast of Playa Honda, so through these documents, the environmental authorities urge the City Council to delimit or restrict access to people to that place.
The San Bartolomé City Council regrets the cancellation of the festive events on such a special date and the inconvenience it may cause to the residents of the municipality. However, it respects the conclusions of the experts in biodiversity and can only remain on the side of the defense of the environment, sustainability and a rich biodiversity that make Lanzarote a world reference in nature protection.
The planned events, including the bonfire or the concert, with the consequent massive presence of people, could "endanger", according to the reports, the habitat of this threatened species, which is cited as "vulnerable" in the Canary Islands Catalog of Protected Species and in the Spanish Catalog of Threatened Species.
