Radio Lanzarote-Onda Cero has launched the VIII Short Story Contest, an edition that this year will pay tribute to the bicentenary of the publication of the novel 'Frankenstein or the Modern Prometheus', by the British writer Mary Shelley. It was on January 1, 1818 when Shelley's work was published in London, giving rise to the most famous horror story of all time. A story that was later brought to the cinema, achieving success and popularity.
Its origin dates back to the summer of 1816, when a group of English aristocrats, including Lord Byron, the poet Percy Shelley and his wife Mary Shelley, met in Switzerland. The rain, cold and wind did not stop and, to combat boredom, Lord Byron proposed a game, that each of them write a supernatural story, original and with a strong and charismatic character as the protagonist.
Mary Shelley thus began to write what she thought would be a short novel, but expanded the small short story until it became her first novel, 'Frankenstein or the Modern Prometheus'.
Radio Lanzarote-Onda Cero's proposal for its VIII Short Story Contest is to imagine the continuation of the story, after the monster created by Dr. Frankestein "jumped out of the cabin window onto the raft that floated next to the ship. Soon the waves carried him away, and he was lost in the distance and in the darkness."
Participation rules
As in previous editions, the maximum length of the stories must be 100 words, including the title if it has one.
The radio must be part of the story and each author may send a maximum of five stories, which may be signed with a pseudonym, although a name and contact telephone number must always be indicated. The deadline to participate in the literary contest of Radio Lanzarote begins this Monday, July 2 and will end on Friday, August 31, both included.
The stories will be published in order of receipt in La Voz de Lanzarote and will be read in the 'Reading on the Radio' space of Radio Lanzarote-Onda Cero. However, both publication and reading will be subject to the space and time availability of both media.
The decision of the contest will be made by a jury formed by journalists from Radio Lanzarote-Onda Cero and La Voz de Lanzarote, who will choose three winning stories and seven finalists. The decision will be made public in the second half of September.
The winners will receive the following prizes:
