Winning Stories
A character loses his author, Juan Lira
Eladio Monroy entered, as almost always, at twelve, in the Casablanca bar. He ordered a cortado and sat down to read the newspaper. On the cover was the news: The writer Alexis Ravelo has died at the age of 51... "But we were chatting all night about future projects... He looked so excited..." Eladio took a sip of the coffee which, suddenly and surprisingly, tasted like nothing. "I can't believe it... This must be a nightmare..." Suddenly he began to perceive the environment blurred, murky... As if through a thick fog... Everything seemed so distant now... As in slow motion, the coffee cup faded between his fingers, and then his hands, his arms... And everything turned black... "Thank God... It's just a bad dream... But... Who the hell is dreaming me!?"
A character loses his author by Reyes María Concepción Betancor
Eladio Monroy entered, as almost always, at twelve, in the Casablanca bar. He ordered a cortado and sat down to read the newspaper. On the cover was the news: The writer Alexis Ravelo has died at the age of 51... His mentor, his adventure buddy. Dead. Eladio reacted. Finally free. Free to do and be how he had always wanted. Wear a jacket with a hood, one of those casual ones. Jeans, have hair, black hair and a nose according to his face, be taller,... more risky. Take on many cases simultaneously and solve them all highlighting his expertise. "Eladio Monroy"... even the name would change... and the years, he would take off a few. See everything closer than far. A chalet on the coast, sleep lulled by the sound of the waves. And a boat to set sail to unknown places.
A character loses his author, Yasmina Cabrera Guerra
Eladio Monroy entered, as almost always, at twelve, in the Casablanca bar. He ordered a cortado and sat down to read the newspaper. On the cover was the news: The writer Alexis Ravelo has died at the age of 51... He felt a tight knot in his throat, like a tie. -What courage! Just now that he was starting to enjoy getting into trouble with businesses bordering on legality and reasonably remunerated for some time now, now that Gloria had a key to his apartment, now that Chapi's skinny guy and Dudú's good guy had painted the Renault a less annoying color, now that Inspector Déniz was retiring and leaving vacant the honorary title of pain in the ass. Anyway, death is always so untimely and clearly premature! And he put on a wake face.

Eladio, through the mirror in front of the bar, could see how all the characters from Alexis's books were entering, sitting in silence, forming the audience of a great theater waiting for the act. He was disconcerted to see how they all had features of the writer: one had his nose, another the movement of his hands, some his smile... Eladio, anxious, got up to see his face in the mirror.
