The town of Yaiza opens this Friday, August 30, its celebrations in honor of the Virgin Nuestra Señora de Los Remedios with the reading of the proclamation by María Dolores Rodríguez González, a teacher with roots in Yaiza invited by the City Council chaired by Óscar Noda to kick off the entire festive program, which from the first weekend is presented as an intense meeting full of culture, tradition and revelry.
The solemn act of reading the proclamation will be this Friday the 30th in the Plaza de Los Remedios, at 8:00 p.m., and not inside the Casa de la Cultura as it had been held in recent years. The proclaimer is a retired teacher with a career of forty years of service to primary and secondary education in the subjects of geography and history, although she also participated in public management in her capacity as Councilor for Education of Arrecife (2007 - 2011) and Deputy Minister of Education, Vocational Training, Universities and Sports of the Government of the Canary Islands, in the last legislature (2019 – 2023).
“We invite the people of Lanzarote to the proclamation ceremony, which, due to the experiences of our proclaimer in Yaiza and her knowledge of what was happening in the municipality during and outside the festivities, is sure to have stories to share with details for many unknown people,” says the Councilor for Festivities, Daniel Medina.
The first festive day does not end with the proclamation ceremony. The Rubicón Folk Festival once again summons lovers of Canarian popular music and dance immediately after the opening of the festivities. The night continues and ends with a dance enlivened by the groups Vocal Force and Tremendo Son.
On Saturday there is a foam party in the morning, starting at 11:00 a.m., and in the afternoon another meeting with tradition, the Yaiza pilgrimage, which will depart from the parking lot of the soccer field to the facade of the church where groups and parrandas will make offerings in the form of touch and dance, in addition to the products of the land and basic necessities that pilgrims donate to distribute among vulnerable families.
The City Council informs that during the pilgrimage route a prize will be given to the best decorated cart. The southern Saturday also proposes Noche de Parrandas with the music of El Golpito, Son del Norte, Gurfines Son del Puerto and El Jable, and the election of Mago and Maga Yaiza 2024.
Sunday continues the march at 1:00 p.m. at noon with the Beer Festival. The rock bands Sin Cobertura, Salvapantallas, Inerxia and Bourbon are invited there, in the Plaza de Los Remedios. There will be a playroom for children in the Casa de la Cultura, attached to the square, from 12:00 to 19:00. And on the same Sunday, at 9:00 p.m., the comedian Petit Lorena takes the stage.
