Lanzarote does not forget and every November 28, family members, neighbors, friends and authorities gather in Puerto de Naos next to the monument 'The Light that Guides Us', to honor all the sailors who died at sea. At 7:00 p.m. this Tuesday, the parish priest of Valterra, Nicanor Bermúdez, recited a prayer, keeping very present the seven vilely murdered on board the fishing boat 'Cruz del Mar'.
After the prayer, the choir formed by women 'Iris del Mar' from Valterra, performed a prayer song ending with the 'Salve Marinera'. Then, the representatives of the institutions of the Parliament of the Canary Islands, the Cabildo of Lanzarote and the Town Halls of the island, deposited the wreaths of flowers at the feet of the image of Our Lady of Carmen, located in the chapel installed inside the monument.
On November 28, 1978, the terrorist act shook the foundations of Lanzarote, where seven sailors from the fishing boat 'Cruz del Mar', who were fishing in the waters of the Canarian-Saharan Bank, when they were preparing dinner, were approached by a zodiac with armed men who boarded and fired their weapons on the deck of the fishing boat, murdering seven of the ten sailors. Only the three who jumped into the water were able to save their lives and a few minutes later, they witnessed how a great explosion ended the structure of the ship, sinking it in the Atlantic.
The crew of the fishing boat 'Chico Grande', which was fishing very close by, approached the scene and was able to rescue the three crew members who had managed to escape from the murderers. 45 years have passed and Lanzarote does not forget them.
