The Young Orchestra of the Canary Islands (JOCAN) is touring the eight islands these days with its brass quintet tour ¡A todo bronce! Eleven instrumentalists, under the direction of Mark Hampson, make up this chamber group that has already been to El Hierro, La Palma, La Gomera, and Tenerife. After a brief stop, they will resume their concerts on the four eastern islands, from July 23 to 26.
Migdalia Machín, Minister of Culture of the Government of the Canary Islands, promoter of the project, accompanied the group at their concert in Tenerife, held this Monday the 20th at the Church of Santo Domingo de La Orotava, within the framework of the Villa Chamber Music Festival. “A masterful performance that confirms that talent, effort, and dedication are the best path to achieve excellence,” highlighted the head of Culture.
“The JOCAN is an example of how culture also builds opportunities for our youth and projects the talent of the Canary Islands,” Machín clarified at the end of this concert that filled the Orotava temple, the last stop in the western islands. Next up: La Graciosa, Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, and Gran Canaria. “I encourage all citizens to enjoy these concerts, a close, dynamic, and very high-level program.”
¡A todo bronce!, in reference to the emblematic material with which brass instruments are made, includes works created for them in different stages of music history, especially the 20th century: ‘Fanfare pour La Peri’, by Paul Dukas; ‘Sonata Pian e Forte’, by Giovanni Gabrieli; ‘A Londoner in New York’, by Jim Parker; ‘Three more cats’, by Chris Hazell; and ‘Tientos y Danzas’, by Gareth Wood. All under the direction of Mark Hampson, a prestigious British musician, master, and international reference for the trombone.
The chamber ensemble kicked off this tour on July 17 in El Hierro to continue, for the next three days, in La Palma, La Gomera, and Tenerife. Now, a short break to regain strength and resume concerts: on the 23rd, at 7:30 p.m., at the Inocencia Páez Sociocultural Center in La Graciosa; on the 24th at the same time at the Benito Pérez Armas Cultural Center in Yaiza, in Lanzarote; on July 25th at 8:00 p.m. at the Church of Antigua, in Fuerteventura, and they will finish at the Municipal Center of Culture of La Aldea de San Nicolás, in Gran Canaria, on July 26th at 8:00 p.m.
