Gema Rupérez will exhibit her project 'Missed call' at Espacio Dörffi in Lanzarote, a project "in which she juxtaposes something as sublime as poetry, immortalized in books, with its symbolic opposite in the collective imagination, prostitution, subjected to invisibility." The exhibition will open this Friday, April 6 and will remain open until May 9.

The artist from Zaragoza publishes verses extracted from love poems written by recognized women in the contact section of a local newspaper. "The advertisements, different from each other, are associated with the same telephone number, an active mobile phone that is exposed as part of the installation, next to the newspaper sheets, receiving and recording calls from unknown numbers, in real time. The tension produced by the phone being on, which can ring at any moment, in the middle of the viewer's contemplation or reflection process, is interesting. The anonymous call interrupts the silence and it is then that the work definitively questions", is explained from Espacio Dörffi

"With the use of poetry, the artist decompresses the tension that still generates the fact of dealing with the subject of an activity/profession that is still not exempt from controversy [prostitution] and that does not even agree with the different factions of the plurivocal corpus of feminism", wrote the curator and art critic Blanca de la Torre about the exhibition.

About Gema Rupérez

Gema Rupérez (Zaragoza, 1982) has a degree in Fine Arts from the Faculty of San Carlos (Valencia). Among her latest scholarships and awards are the Ramón Acín scholarship (Diputación de Huesca), the First Prize of Plastic Arts Fundación Ramón J. Sender (UNED), the 2nd Position of the 3rd International Emerging Artist Award (Dubai) and the residency at Kiosko Galería (Bolivia). She has also exhibited individually or collectively in France, Canada, the United States, Japan, Bolivia, Italy and Spain.

"Gema Rupérez's work revolves around the desire for survival. The confrontation and the struggle for hegemonic power is a constant in her latest projects. Instability, vulnerability and frustration are also part of the emotional content of her works. Through different media such as installation, photography, video or drawing, she reflects on the power or inability to communicate and, ultimately, on the dystopias of contemporary society. Her work aspires to be a lyrical distortion of reality", they point out from Espacio Dörffi

'Missed call', made in collaboration with the César Manrique Foundation, is the sixth exhibition of Espacio Dörffi, a private art center that opened its doors on the island on September 9, 2017. The space is a meeting point for the exhibition and sale of contemporary art whose objective is the search for connections with professionals of the plastic and visual arts from diverse geographical areas, to further enrich the island's artistic network.
