Femés celebrated last Friday, July 7, the 'Great Day of San Marcial de Rubicón', a date marked by the veneration and respect of dozens of believers and companions who participated in the mass, officiated in the town square, after the pilgrimage through the streets of the historic town that honors the Patron Saint of Lanzarote and the Canary Islands every year. Commemorating this 2023, the 619 years of the creation of the Bishopric of Rubicón and the Canarian Rubicense Diocese (1404) in the south of Lanzarote, under the patronage of San Marcial, the oldest saint in the Canary Islands.
The 'Yaiza Vocal Group', in the celebration of the Eucharist, the Municipal Band, in the procession, and the 'Rubicón Folk Group', with its offering of music and dance, at the end of the religious day in front of the church, adorned the events presided over by Cristóbal Déniz, auxiliary bishop of the Diocese of the Canary Islands, invited by the parish priest of Yaiza, Jonathan Almeida.
Civil and military authorities of the island were present in Femés, with the group of councilors of the municipal Corporation of Yaiza acting as hosts, headed this day by the second Deputy Mayor, Karina Centeno, and the Councilor for Festivities, Javier Camacho. In addition, Oswaldo Betancort, mayors of the island and other public representatives also participated in the commemorative events of the Day of San Marcial.
Femés began the celebration of its festivities on June 30 with the proclamation by one of its neighbors, Elisa Rodríguez Reyes. From then on, the town and visitors celebrated their identity, tradition and cohesion enjoying a varied program full of activities and shows combining plastic and scenic arts, folklore, dances and concerts, among others, according to the Yaiza City Council.
After the procession, the end of the festivities reserved the fifteenth edition of the 'San Marcial de Rubicón Soloists Meeting', starring the 'Janubio' band and the voices of Iván Quintana, Elvia Plata, Inma Sepúlveda, Elieser Betancort and the renowned Canarian tenor, Besay Pérez. Who put the musical icing on the cake with his acoustic concert in the town square.
The closing night was with the verbena animated by the 'Kalibre' from Fuerteventura and 'Wamampy' from La Gomera. The municipality of Yaiza is focusing this week on the 'Fiestas del Carmen' of the town of Playa Blanca.
