The Historical Heritage Service of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, in collaboration with the Government of the Canary Islands, the Canary Islands Development Fund and the Art, Culture and Tourism Centers, has organized the dissemination conferences called Archeology under the sand: past, present and future of research at the La Peña de las Cucharas- Fiquinineo site.

This meeting will take place at the Farmer's Monument from October 2 to 4 and will feature the participation of specialists in archeology, history and heritage to delve into one of the most relevant sites in the Canary Islands. As stated by the president of the Island Council and head of the Heritage Area, Oswaldo Betancort, “with the support and financing of the Cabildo of Lanzarote and the Government of the Canary Islands, the La Peña de Las Cucharas-Fiquinineo site is one of the few heritage enclaves in the Archipelago with an uninterrupted continuity in research, dissemination and educational work, thus becoming a benchmark in the knowledge of the aboriginal past and the historical evolution of our island.”

Since 2009, the interventions at this site have provided highly relevant data on the final stage of the Majos, the subsequent occupation of Casa Honda, after the Norman conquest of 1402, and the changes in the functionality of the site until its definitive abandonment in the 17th century. Likewise, the richness of the recovered materials, the stratigraphic sequences and the constructive remodeling of the walls have made it possible to reinterpret the importance of Fiquinineo in the historical framework of Lanzarote and the Archipelago.

In this sense, Oswaldo Betancort emphasizes that “the research and dissemination of our heritage is key to understanding who we are as a people. La Peña de Las Cucharas-Fiquinineo constitutes a unique legacy that connects us with the origins of Lanzarote and that obliges us to protect it and value it for future generations. With these conferences we want to bring that knowledge closer to society, reinforcing the Cabildo's commitment to the conservation and dissemination of our history.”

For her part, the vice president and head of the Planning and Project Coordination Area of the Cabildo, María Jesús Tovar, assures that this initiative “responds to the study of where we come from and where we want to go.” “The dissemination of our heritage is an essential tool for society to value, protect and feel part of its history.”
