The Villa de Teguise dawned with a very different atmosphere from any other day. It was the big day of its festivities, the feast of Our Lady of Carmen, Patroness of Sailors, a Marian devotion that occupies a privileged place in the hearts of the people of Teguise, who generation after generation come to Her to give thanks for favors received and to entrust her with the protection of their families and of all those who make the sea their way of life.
From the early hours of the morning, La Villa de Teguise breathed an air of festivity and tradition. The image of Our Lady of Carmen looked especially radiant, beautifully enthroned and adorned with exquisite floral ornamentation that further enhanced her extraordinary beauty. Inside the main church of Our Lady of Guadalupe, there was no room for another soul. Its three naves were completely full of faithful who wanted to participate in such a significant celebration, many of them wearing their best clothes and even new attire, thus recovering a beautiful custom inherited from our elders that continues to be part of the most endearing traditions of this historic town.
At noon, the Solemn Eucharist began, presided over by the Reverend Antonio Perera Pérez, parish priest of Nuestra Señora del Pilar, in Guanarteme (Las Palmas de Gran Canaria), accompanied by the titular parish priest of Teguise, Juan Manuel Molina. The ceremony was imbued with a deep spiritual and liturgical sense, while the Parish Choir, under the direction of Professor Milagros Herrera, contributed with its interpretations to further enhance a celebration marked by emotion, recollection, and prayer.
After the Holy Mass, one of the most anticipated moments of the day arrived. The incessant ringing of the bells, the prolonged applause of the faithful, and the roar of the traditional firecrackers announced the processional exit of Our Lady of Carmen. Just as the venerated image crossed the portico of the temple, it was received with enormous enthusiasm by the "Teguiband" Music Band, from Teguise, directed by Professor Ayoze Rodríguez, whose interpretations solemnly accompanied the walk of the Patroness of Sailors.
The procession traveled through the centuries-old cobblestone streets of the Historic Complex of La Villa de Teguise on a bright morning that seemed to join the celebration as well. Along the route, the image was accompanied by the celebrating priests, civil and military authorities, and a multitude of faithful who walked behind Her with absolute respect, deep devotion, and sincere reverence, offering one of the most moving and representative scenes of the festivities.
Every corner of the historic center became an authentic stage of faith, where tradition, culture, and religious sentiment once again went hand in hand to keep alive a legacy passed down from fathers to sons. There were emotional glances, silent prayers, and expressions of affection for the Virgin, a reflection of a devotion that remains intact over the years.
Upon returning to the temple, before crossing the church portal again. Our Lady of Carmen was bid farewell with a sustained ovation, cheers, and emotional shouts that put the finishing touch on the central act of festivities deeply rooted in the popular sentiment of La Villa de Teguise.
Thus concluded the big day of the festivities in honor of the Patroness of Sailors, a day lived with extraordinary solemnity, elegance, and religious fervor, in which residents and visitors faithfully responded to the Mother's call to thank Her for Her protection and to place, once again, their hopes and prayers under Her protection.
Because beyond the protocol and the brilliance of the events, the festivity of Our Lady of Carmen once again demonstrated that in La Villa de Teguise, faith continues to be a living heritage, a deeply rooted tradition, and a sentiment that unites an entire town around the image of their beloved Patroness of Sailors.
