The Department of Culture of the Arrecife City Council encourages all groups, associations and interested people to join in the preparation of the traditional salt carpets, framed in the celebration of Corpus Christi 2024. The making of the carpets will take place on Saturday, June 1, starting at 5:00 p.m. in the vicinity of the Church of San Ginés.
Councilor Abigail González has highlighted the importance of this activity, which not only celebrates a "tradition deeply rooted in Lanzarote, but also encourages participation and creativity."
“I want to invite all associations, entities and people to join this fun tradition. The making of salt carpets is a unique opportunity to collaborate and create ephemeral art; a special occasion to share time with friends and family and be part of a tradition that unites many people and beautifies our city,” says Abigail González.
The tradition of salt carpets is one of the most emblematic cultural manifestations not only of Arrecife but of the entire island, during Corpus Christi. These colorful carpets, made with salt dyed in various colors, adorn the streets and squares, creating a visual spectacle that attracts both locals and visitors.
To facilitate participation, the Department of Culture of the Arrecife City Council will provide the necessary material for the making of the carpets. Standard measurements vary depending on the space available, with a minimum of two by two meters and a maximum of four by eight meters. Each carpet usually requires around a ton of salt, and with approximately 24 works planned, it is estimated that around 20 tons will be used in total.
The deadline to register for this activity ends on May 27, so all those interested are encouraged to register as soon as possible. For more information and to formalize registration, those interested can contact the Culture Area of the Arrecife City Council at telephone number 928 802 884, extension 1808.
