The trial against the two young men accused of abusing two friends in Arrecife in 2017 was adjourned for sentencing this Tuesday, after a second day that was held behind closed doors and in which the Public Prosecutor's Office raised its provisional conclusions to definitive, thus maintaining the request for sentences of three and eleven years in prison for the defendants.
As La Voz reported, the oral hearing began on Monday with the statements of the accused and this Tuesday the complainants and witnesses were scheduled to testify. However, contrary to what happened on the first day of the trial, the First Section of the Provincial Court decided that the second day should not be public, thus preventing access to the media. A measure that is usually taken in some criminal trials to protect the privacy of the victims.
However, according to judicial sources, the oral hearing proceeded as planned, and was adjourned for sentencing. In addition, the Prosecutor's Office did not introduce any changes in its conclusions and maintained the request for a sentence of three years in prison for Luis Alberto Varela for a crime of non-consensual sexual abuse and eleven years in prison for Abraham Hendrick García by attributing to him two crimes of non-consensual sexual abuse, one of them with carnal access.
Likewise, the Public Prosecutor's Office requests that the accused be imposed with the prohibition of approaching less than 500 meters from the victims in any place where they are, as well as their homes, workplaces or any other frequented by them, in the case of Luis Alberto for three years and in the case of Abraham for six years, three for each crime he is charged with.
Similarly, if convicted, he asks that they be imposed with supervised release after serving the sentences consisting of "the obligation to participate in sexual education programs, with a duration of two years for Luis Alberto and seven years for Abraham.
