The University of La Laguna (ULL) has temporarily suspended the professor of English Philology from his duties for a period of six months, after he was sentenced to 21 months in prison for seven crimes of sexual abuse against female students of the faculty.
The ULL has made this decision after analyzing the ruling that also includes a five-year ban from practicing the teaching profession but outside the university environment.
The events occurred between 2014 and 2017, and seven students were affected, who will be compensated with 24,500 euros (3,500 euros each).
The rector of the ULL, Francisco García, has informed in statements to EFE that "the precautionary suspension of the convicted professor will be maintained while the disciplinary file that the university has decided to reactivate is open, believing that there may be more cases of sexual harassment."
"The objective of reopening the disciplinary file, which was stopped in September 2018 when the information was transferred to the Prosecutor's Office, is to see if there are more actions by the professor that constitute a crime," the rector indicated.
Based on this decision, endorsed by the legal services of the ULL, the professor will not start teaching next Monday, which is when the second semester begins.
He will not carry out any teaching activity at the ULL nor any administrative activity during the next six months, while the file is resolved, which will determine the sanction to be imposed, which may lead to his definitive expulsion from the university.
