The Socialist Group in the Cabildo of Lanzarote has registered this Thursday an appeal for reconsideration against the tourist authorization granted by the Island Government Council to the Hotel Papagayo last August.
The island secretary of the PSOE of Lanzarote and island councilor, Loli Corujo, has accused Oswaldo Betancort and his group of "deliberately lying by trying to hide behind a court ruling to justify the decision of the island government".
“The ruling says what it says and in no case does it oblige the Cabildo to grant that authorization,” explained the councilor, who harshly criticized "that crude attempt to turn what is nothing more than a new demonstration of Oswaldo Betancort's traditional submission to the interests of the promoters into a supposed legal obligation, as he already demonstrated as mayor of Teguise."
Corujo explained that the authorization granted is a frontal attack against tourism legislation, contrary to what Betancort stated: “The sectorial legislation itself requires, as an essential requirement, to have completed the urbanization works and the Cabildo is aware that the urbanization cannot be completed until what has been illegally built on the public road occupied by the hotel is demolished.”
For the socialist leader, it is extremely serious that the Yaiza City Council itself has informed the Cabildo that most of the hotel is affected by the Coasts Law and, despite this, the authorization has been granted.
“Oswaldo Betancort hides behind the fact that it is only a prior procedure, when the truth is that the authorization granted by his government has allowed the registration in the official registry of a hotel that occupies, illegally, the area protected by Coasts,” he denounced.
The socialist leader explained that this appeal for reconsideration is the first step in the legal offensive launched by the PSOE of Lanzarote. “We will resort to as many actions as are within our reach to ensure that this authentic attack against our tourism model is annulled.”
