The Prosecutor's Office has filed a complaint against several public employees of the Arrecife City Council for the alleged commission of the crimes of prevarication and embezzlement upon detecting possible irregularities in the annulment of sanctioning files derived from traffic fines imposed in the municipality.
According to sources from the Las Palmas Prosecutor's Office confirmed to La Voz, the complaint would not yet have been distributed, so the defendants may not yet be aware that they are being investigated by the Public Prosecutor's Office.
The mayor of Arrecife, Yonathan de León (PP), stated on the morning of this Friday that seven are the public workers investigated.
The investigation opened by the Prosecutor's Office arose after the legal services of the Arrecife City Council brought to its attention the alleged irregularities found in the cancellation of more than 2,000 traffic fines in the capital.
The alleged commission of these crimes would have generated a hole in the public coffers of almost 600,000 euros, according to what has been confirmed by the mayor of Arrecife himself, Yonathan de León.
Always according to the mayor of Arrecife, the files correspond to different political mandates, with fines annulled from the year 2016 until the present.
De León stated that he became aware in September 2025 that from the city council traffic fines had allegedly been removed irregularly. After receiving this information, he requested reports from the Local Police, from the Infractions area and also from the company awarded the fine service. With the conclusions and the endorsement of the municipal legal services, he went to the Prosecutor's Office.
