The man accused of burning his wife in Arrecife, for whom the Prosecutor's Office is requesting 19 years in prison, denied the events during the trial, which was held this Tuesday in Gran Canaria. "She made it up out of spite," Guillermo Antonio G. said in the oral hearing, according to La Provincia. The victim, who did not want to report her aggressor, exercised her right not to testify.

"I think she made it up because she wanted to kick me out of the house to bring another man in. After leaving the police station, I found out that she was living with another person because she was bragging about it with other neighbors and they had been together for some time," declared the accused Guillermo Antonio G.

"There is no more atrocious act than trying to burn a person alive, and if he does not extinguish the fire immediately, we would be talking about a more serious crime, such as attempted homicide," the prosecutor lamented, who maintains that the accused poured gasoline on the woman's hair and set it on fire, causing second-degree burns. Injuries that the accused said he did not know how the woman had sustained.

For their part, according to La Provincia, the agents who went to the scene stated that the victim had come hours before the man set her on fire because they had fought and he had put a knife to her neck. "She was nervous and sobbing because her husband hit her, put a knife to her throat, and stole money," an agent stated, who related that later, at 06:00 hours, they were alerted that a woman was being a victim of gender violence "and indeed it was her." She gave off a strong smell of gasoline and her hair was burned," he stated.
