The Lanzarote Bar Association has wanted to respond to the comments that it claims are being published on social networks, in news related to judicial matters, "where the figure of the defense lawyer is undermined."

"The right to be assisted by a lawyer, constitutionally enshrined, is -within fundamental rights- one of those that provides all citizens with the peace of mind of being defended at all times from that public or private accusation, which may be brought against any of us," says the Dean of the Association, Carlos Viña, in a statement.

"That figure, the defense lawyer, man or woman, a legal professional, who at the time of being accused of a crime, will be all hours of the day and every day that is necessary, working to provide us with the best defense, being by our side, personally and emotionally, seeking that our presumption of innocence is not unfairly broken, and ultimately, seeking a sentence adapted to the personal and social circumstances of the defendant, often the 'first victim' of those," he adds.

For this reason, he has publicly requested "understanding for a profession that is fundamental in any democratic system that prides itself on it, and even more so in those that are not so much, carried out by lawyers willing to guarantee each citizen the best possible defense, thereby protecting our right to be considered innocent until there is a sentence that says otherwise."
