The Public Prosecutor's Office is requesting an eight-year prison sentence for the alleged captain of a small boat that arrived in La Santa in October of last year and who will be tried by the Sixth Section of the Provincial Court next Wednesday, June 5th, in Arrecife.
The Public Prosecutor's Office maintains that M.D., of legal age and in an irregular situation in Spain, "in common agreement with other unidentified persons and moved by the desire for profit, charged various amounts of money to 27 immigrants to take them with him to the Canary Islands coasts, knowing that they were violating the rules on entry into the national territory and that, once they arrived, they would be in an irregular situation in Spain."
The aforementioned small boat, according to the indictment, left the coast of Tan-Tan (Morocco) and arrived in Lanzarote at about 8 a.m. on October 25th, specifically at the La Santa dock, "with all the immigrants inside, thus achieving the desired purpose."
According to the Public Prosecutor's Office, "the accused was captaining the aforementioned boat", using "a GPS device" to help him. However, he points out that "the boat lacked any security system, as well as life jackets, thereby endangering the lives of the immigrants."
Therefore, the Public Prosecutor's Office considers that the facts constitute a crime against foreign citizens and is asking for an eight-year prison sentence for M.D. According to reports, the accused has been in provisional detention since October 27th, 2018, and has a deportation agreement for illegal entry into Spanish territory from the day before.
